San Elizario, which is just to the east of El Paso, was the site of of the real first Thanksgiving! Juan de Oñate held a Thanksgiving celebration there in 1598. The day of Thanksgiving was held after Oñate's expedition had gone 5 days without water in the Chihuahuan Desert. The grateful expedition members enjoyed meat and fish next to the Rio Grande.
